A Review Of Simjen – One Of The Brw’s Top 100
Every year, the BRW names and ranks Australia’s top 100 fastest growing small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), giving the business industry much to talk about. Sometimes you can look at the list and see names you know and brands you recognise, but often they will be new to the industry, sparking curiosity in industry professionals like myself.
This year I thought it would be interesting to pick a BRW Fast Starter’s company at random and do some research into their background. A review of sorts. The name my finger landed on was SIMJEN – a name unfamiliar to me I admit. So here is my SIMJEN review, which discusses this unique company that ranked in 68th place for the 2012 BRW listings:
SIMJEN is a business marketing and development company; they describe themselves as the first ‘brand for business’.
According to various sources, SIMJEN was started in 2009 by renowned industry up-and-comer Simon James who has previously worked in print, film and online. Despite the fact that this advertising agency has gone from a small dedicated partnership to a large and bustling team with offices all over the country, their mission has stayed the same – to help SMEs reach their full potential and achieve their business goals.
The first thing I realised when I began my SIMJEN review research was ignorance at not knowing who they were. Sometimes young companies will astound you with their powerful brand identity and professionalism, and SIMJEN was one of those.
For a company that only began in 2009, they look like industry veterans when you first glimpse their online presence. They have an in-depth website, an engaging online newsletter, their own magazine, a very interactive social media campaign and an established place in the local Brisbane philanthropy community. Actually, if there is anything that my SIMJEN review has taught me, it’s not to underestimate up-and-comers.
With a fierce passion for business and a determination for building up their company, there’s no wonder SIMJEN has already made it into the top 100. It’s quite clear that their rise to notoriety has not been luck or fluke – their success is the result of hard work, strategic thinking, extensive planning and the guidance of their CEO and founder Simon James.
The majority of SIMJEN reviews reflect a company that strive for customer satisfaction, and speak to any of their clients (as I did) and you’ll learn about their commitment to perfection. According to the three clients I spoke with (after viewing their work in SIMJEN’s website portfolio) the entire team treat their trade more like an art than a profession. They love what they do and this shows in the services they provide to their clients.
In one last effort to get to know the personality behind SIMJEN for my review, I went ahead and attended one of their industry networking events. Held once a month, they’re called ‘BLACKBOOK’ and attended by not only SIMJEN staff and clients, but also other SMEs from the local areas who are interested in meeting other industry professionals. Much like my initial reaction to their extensive online presence and establishment in the community, this event blew my mind and solidified my impression of this top 100 company. Staff worked the room like seasoned professionals and even I couldn’t help but be drawn into the magic of it all.
I even stole a chance to interview CEO Simon James while I was there, to give my SIMJEN review that extra bit of balance and secretly to learn what it is that drives them. I spoke to him in length about the work SIMJEN had been doing, discussed their inclusion in the top 100 and asked what their secret weapon was that gave them the Midas touch.
“As cliché as it sounds, we work hard and we play hard,” explains Simon. “I mean, we love what we do and we have a lot of fun doing it, but at the end of the day, the entire team is incredibly hard working and we’re willing to go the extra mile to be better, stronger and more competitive than anyone else.”
In conclusion, there is no doubting that SIMJEN is a company to keep your eye on. Their journey thus far in the business industry has impressed me and clearly whatever they’re doing is working; their inclusion in the BRW Fast Starter’s list is testament to that. My SIMJEN review has taught me a lot and they have certainly intrigued me; I will be interested to see where they go in the future.
